Comment Subscriptions Now Available

I have added a new feature at the suggestion of Chip Bennett: Comment Subscriptions. When you leave a comment on a post (or even if you don’t), you will be given the opportunity to subscribe to the comments other people leave on the same post. Once subscribed, you will receive email notifications each time a new comment is posted. Also, you will be able to manage your comment subscriptions from a personalized page.

Let me know your thoughts on this, and please let me know if you encounter any problems.

Theme Changes

For the next few days (or weeks), I will be fiddling with the Theme for this blog. You may notice that some things keep moving around, appearing, or disappearing. Never fear, it is just me having some fun.

New Feature Added, New Poll Posted

A new feature has been added which will allow you to print posts right from the blog itself. When you click the “Print this post” link at the bottom of the post, it will open a new window which will allow you to print the post and comments without any of the sidebars or other graphics, with the exception of any images within the post itself.

Give it a shot and let me know of any problems or suggestions.

Also, I have posted a new poll in the sidebar, so please stop by and register your opinion.

Introducing: Gravatars

The new version of WordPress has a lot of features built into it, and one of those features is the ability to use Gravatars. These are small pictures, or avatars, which are associated with your email address and will follow you around the web. Whenever you leave leave a comment on a blog that uses Gravatars, your Gravatar will appear next to your comment.

Now that this feature is built in and requires me to do nothing more than place a script command in my comment template, I have replaced the Favatars with Gravatars. So, if you already have a Gravatar and you have left your email address with your comment, your Gravatar will automatically show up with your comment.

I know, I know, this isn’t anything Earth-shattering, but I thought it was neat. If you want to create your own Gravatar, just go here and follow the directions.

WordPress Upgrade

Tonight I took the plunge and went ahead and upgraded the WordPress software which runs this blog. WordPress 2.5 has many new features, however almost all of them are behind-the-scenes so readers should not really notice any differences. However, if you find that something no longer works, please let me know either in the comments or by sending me an email at the address in the sidebar.

Opinion on New Logo

I’ve been playing around with a new graphics program called Paint.NET. It’s free software and does a lot of the stuff that Photoshop does without costing a million dollars. Anyway, here is the logo:

What do you think? Please leave suggestions/comments/ideas in the comments. I’d really like to hear some feedback on this.

2/29/2008 – UPDATE: I have placed the new logo into the theme and I must say I like it a lot. It makes a nice change to the look of the blog.

WordPress Upgraded

I’ve updated WordPress to version 2.3. As a result, the Headline Images plugin, which created the images for the post titles, no longer functions. So, the post tiles are going to look quite plain for awhile until either the plugin is updated or I find a replacement.

UPDATE: I have found a replacement for Headline Images. It is called Image Replacement and is authored by Glen Slaven. It seems to work fine, with the exception of not wrapping the title text after a certain number of characters to make sure that the titles don’t exceed the width of the content container. As long as I keep the titles nice and pithy, this shouldn’t be a problem. Also, if you want to see the new titles, you’ll need to allow Javascript to run for this site.

A Few Changes Have Been Made…

I made some behind-the-scenes changes to the blog today. I was originally going to completely change the look of the blog by installing a new theme, but decided against that drastic of a change for now. However, I have removed a few of the Sidebar Items and replaced them with other things.

You’ll notice there is now a section which shows you the last five Comments and Trackbacks which were made. Also, I’ve upgraded the Democracy Poll Plugin to the latest version. I have removed a few of the blog rolls which appeared on the Sidebar because some of them were hanging, causing load times to be unacceptably long. Finally, I’ve installed a plugin which should make the Tool Tips you see when you point your mouse at a picture or hyperlink nicer looking.

As always, please let me know what you think about the changes.

Upgrade in Progress…
