Reid and Pelosi Continue to Beat the Defeatist Drum

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

In their quest to humiliate the armed forces of the U.S. before the entire planet, Democrats Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to the President telling him that are going to once again attempt to take over his responsibilities as Commander-in-Chief:

Top US congressional Democrats bluntly told President George W. Bush Wednesday that his Iraq troop “surge” policy was a failure.

Senate Majority leader Harry Reid and House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi challenged the president over Iraq by sending him a letter, ahead of a White House meeting later on Wednesday.

“As many had forseen, the escalation has failed to produce the intended results,” the two leaders wrote.

Pelosi and Reid told Bush in the letter that they planned to send him new legislation to “limit the US mission in Iraq, begin the phased redeployment of US forces, and bring the war to a responsible end.”

On Tuesday, Reid said that Senate Democrats would attach troop withdrawal deadlines to a Defense Department Authorization bill, due to be debated within weeks.

It’s the same song, second verse for these mental midgets. They seem to have already made up their mind that the surge strategy isn’t working, regardless of what the military personnel are saying. If you will recall, General David Petraeus said the following:

Washington — Coalition forces in Iraq have had “some notable successes” in recent months, but the situation remains “exceedingly complex and very tough,” the senior U.S. commander in Iraq told Pentagon reporters April 26.

Army General David Petraeus also said that in early September the United States will conduct a full assessment of the Iraq mission’s progress and then will make recommendations as a result of that assessment.

That’s right: the person who conceived the plan says that it can’t be fully evaluated until September of 2007, and the defeatist liberals in the Congress are so intent on humiliating both the U.S. Military and President Bush that they have declared defeat three months ahead of time.

Oh well, what do those Generals know, anyway? I mean, Nancy has actually been to Iraq, so it is only logical that she knows better than the people who are actually fighting the enemy over there. Why take the word of a person who has been trained and educated in the art of warfare, and then deployed to the front lines to fight the War on Terror, over a politician who is grandstanding for the whacked-out far-left base of the Democrat Party for purely political purposes? I mean, clearly Pelosi and Reid know better than some General, right?

But whatever you do, don’t question their patriotism, right?

If, come September, the Iraqi Civil War (because let’s not kid ourselves, they’re going after each other more than us at this point) is still in full force and we’re not making any significant progress what do you propose then?

I’m genuinely curious, because I haven’t seen anything but “stay the course” rhetoric since the Surge was introduced and I, quite frankly, don’t want to see my entire generation spent policing a civil war in the Middle East.

If, by the time September rolls around, it becomes apparent that the current strategy is not working, it becomes incumbent on the people in charge to either change their plans or start to consider the best way to go forward. This could mean implementing a new attack plan, or it could mean withdrawal of troops IF the Iraqi government is not meeting the benchmarks set for it.

While I believe we owe it to the Iraqi people to stay and do what we promised we’d do, I also believe that if they are not putting their best efforts into sustaining their new government I see no reason to spill any more American blood or treasure.
