Democrats “Cut and Run” from Debate
Monday, March 12th, 2007In what can only be seen as a preview of their Iraqi War Policy, the Nevada State Democrat Party, as well as the John Edwards campaign, have caved in to pressure from far-left activists and pulled their participation in a debate for Democrat Presidential candidates which was to be sponsored by Fox News.
The Nevada State Democratic Party is pulling out of a controversial presidential debate scheduled for Aug. 14 in Reno and co-hosted by Fox News, according to a letter released late Friday from state party chairman Tom Collins and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev).
The letter said Nevada Democrats had entered into the agreement with Fox, despite strong opposition from Democratic activist groups such as MoveOn.org, as a way of finding “new ways to talk to new people.”
But Collins and Reid wrote that comments on Thursday by FOX News Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes, when he jokingly compared Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, the junior senator from Illinois, to Osama bin Laden, “went too far,” and prompted Nevada Democrats to end the partnership.
“We cannot, as good Democrats, put our party in a position to defend such comments,” the letter said.
The Nevada Democrats had a nice announcement posted on their web site publicizing the debates, but they have since deleted it from their site. According to Politico.com, the original notice read, in part:
“This is more great news for Nevada,” he [Harry Reid] said in the statement. “I’m happy FOX News will be a partner for the August presidential debate. Western issues will be a major focus of this debate in particular. With FOX News as our partner, candidates will have an opportunity to not only speak to Nevada voters, but voters across the West who will be instrumental to electing a Democratic president in 2008.”
Apparently Harry Reid is now taking his marching orders from the lunatic fringe on the web, rather than the lunatic fringe from San Francisco.
Also folding like a lawn chair under pressure from far-left web sites such as Daily KOS, the John Edwards campaign has also withdrawn their participation:
Several of the campaigns I contacted are still trying to make a final determination, but the first to definitely say “no” is John Edwards. Deputy Campaign Manager Jonathan Prince emailed me the great news:
We will not be participating in the Fox debate.
We’re going to make lots of appearances in Nevada,
including debates. By the end of March, we will have
attended three presidential forums in Nevada – and
there are already at least three proposed Nevada
debates. We’re definitely going to debate in
Nevada, but we don’t see why this needs to be
one of them.Great job by the Edwards campaign on this, showing real leadership on this issue. Hopefully others will soon follow.
Leave it to the far-left to equate running away with leadership. Observers will have noticed that this is the second time the Edwards Campaign has caved in to the orders of the far-left extremists on these web sites. Leadership like this the country can do without.
