“Freshmen” Banned at High School

Monday, October 31st, 2005

A high school in Amherst, New Hampshire has banned the use of the term “freshmen” as possibly being misogynistic, oppressive or non-inclusive language:

Amherst Regional High School has banished the term “freshman”- a move the principal calls overdue, but some students say oozes political correctness.

Beginning this year, students in ninth grade are now referred to by the gender-neutral title “ninth-graders.”

“This is 2005 and the word ‘man’or ‘men’ no longer refers to all people,” said Samantha Camera, a social studies teacher at the high school. She said the change was an opportunity to use more inclusive language.

Funny how it wasn’t the students who complained about the term freshmen, it was the staff at the high school. Of course, the event which started all this explains a lot about the motives of the staff:

ARHS Assistant Principal Marta Guevara, who spearheaded the change, said the decision to move away from ‘freshman’ was a result of conversations among faculty that began after the controversial production of The Vagina Monologues two years ago.

Again, the students were not complaining about the use of this term; the staff decided that they were being offended and that it had to be discarded. Here we go down the slippery slope of political correctness. Think I’m paranoid? Here’s the last paragraph of the story:

Guevara said such conversations could eventually mean doing away with all class terms, such as “junior,”"senior,” and “upperclassmen.” These changes are not under discussion at this point.

Instead of teaching your children to read, write, and do mathematics, these people are wasting their time worshiping at the temple of political correctness. This is why little Johnny can’t read, even though he graduated from high school. Instead of concentrating on teaching your children what they need to know to function in today’s world, they are indoctrinating your children in political correctness.

The only thing that the children who graduate from this high school will accomplish is not offending their parents when they move back into their home because they can’t get a job.

Why does this even warrant a thread? With America fast hemorraging every job in manufacturing and other sectors that it can to cheaper overseas markets, with with an illegal and totally unneccesary war in Iraq that two and a half years into it the so-called “world’s only superpower” can’t even control the airport road in Baghdad (!), with any potential threat nations seeing plainly America’s display of military weaknesses that is the debacle in Iraq, with America losing the propaganda war as every country in the world now can’t help but see America and its goals for what they really are, with America further isolating itself from the rest of the world with its denial of the Kyoto Treaty on global warming, the International Criminal Court (only a fool can’t see why they bowed out of that one) and the ABM treaty, with an administration plagued by MEANINGFUL scandals that they WISH were only pissant messes like the Lewinski affair, with obvious rampant cronyism and corruption in the administration, with its ameteurish and halfhearted efforts regarding Hurricane ‘Katrina’ that fooled no-one, not even their uber-ignorant base, why bother with something as silly as this? Aren’t there more important things to worry about?

I won’t attempt to change your mind about all of the junk you’ve mentioned above; you’ve obviously been drinking the Kool-Aid far to long to listen to reason and learn how to discern fact from fiction.

However, this is my blog, and I write about whatever I chose to write about. If you don’t like it, leave.
