Katrina Wreeks Havoc, Democrats Blame Bush

Wednesday, September 7th, 2005

Rush Limbaugh has been telling Americans for a long time that the longer Democrats are out of power in Washington, the crazier they get. Submitted for your approval, Exhibit 1:

Congress’ top two Democrats furiously criticized the administration’s response to Hurricane Katrina on Wednesday, with Sen. Harry Reid demanding to know whether President Bush’s Texas vacation impeded relief efforts and Rep. Nancy Pelosi assailing the chief executive as ”oblivious, in denial.”

Can there be a more insipid example of human stupidity than the leadership of the Congressional Democrats? Do these people have any idea how this looks to the average person who is sitting at home, watching coverage of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and wondering what they can do to help? Do they know how petty they look?

In a letter to the Senate’s Homeland Security Committee chairwoman, Reid, the Senate Democratic leader, pressed for a wide-ranging investigation and answers to several questions, including: ”How much time did the president spend dealing with this emerging crisis while he was on vacation? Did the fact that he was outside of Washington, D.C., have any effect on the federal government’s response?”

Is this idiot serious? While the President is the chief executive of the government, I don’t think that it is mandatory the the President be in the Oval Office in order for FEMA to function. In fact, I’m quite sure that the President appoints someone to run that agency, and that he is capable of doing so without the President breathing down his neck while he does it. That being said, between Air Force One and all of the advanced communications devices installed at the President’s Ranch in Crawford, I don’t believe it is necessary for the President to physically be in Washington for him to do his job. Of course, if all you’re concerned with is trashing the President and making him look bad, none of these facts probably even occurred to you.

At a news conference, Pelosi, D-Calif., said Bush’s choice for head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency had ”absolutely no credentials.”

She related that she had urged Bush at the White House on Tuesday to fire Michael Brown.

”He said ‘Why would I do that?”’ Pelosi said.

”’I said because of all that went wrong, of all that didn’t go right last week.’ And he said ‘What didn’t go right?”’

”Oblivious, in denial, dangerous,” she added.

Funny, but I can’t find that portion of the Constitution which instructs the President to base his agency appointments on the whims of the leader of the minority party in Congress. Someone should inform Ms. Pelosi of the actual role that the federal government plays in a disaster like this. The role played by the feds is subservient to the state and local governments. In fact, the feds can only get involved upon the request of the local authorities. The President did all he could when he designated the Gulf Coast area as a disaster area two days prior to landfall of Katrina, thus beginning the flow of aid money to the region.

The Democrats have become so desperate for power, that they see everything through the prism of politics. Most people see Katrina and wonder what they can do to help. Democrats see Katrina and wonder how they can use the hurricane to their political advantage. While the relief efforts are still in full swing, the Democrats are already calling for commissions to investigate the relief efforts. While rescue workers are still pulling people out of flooded houses, the Democrats want to investigate whether or not the rescue workers got their fast enough. These people are insane. Our only hope is that the voting public remembers all of this come election time in 2006.
