Bush Address Reassures America, Upsets Democrats

Wednesday, June 29th, 2005

President Bush’s address to the nation last night went a long way towards reassuring a nervous country that the War on Terror is proceeding nicely, and that any sacrifices made by Americans will be worth it in the long run.

The work in Iraq is difficult and dangerous. Like most Americans, I see the images of violence and bloodshed. Every picture is horrifying — and the suffering is real. Amid all this violence, I know Americans ask the question: Is the sacrifice worth it? It is worth it, and it is vital to the future security of our country. And tonight I will explain the reasons why.

Of course, Democrats, a lot of whom had written their responses to the address prior to its delivery, had nothing but venom to offer:

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi criticized Bush for not outlining benchmarks and timetables to be reached to measure progress in Iraq, and she accused the president of trying to exploit the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks for political gain.
“The president’s frequent references to the terrorist attacks of September 11 show the weakness of his arguments. He is willing to exploit the sacred ground of 9/11, knowing that there is no connection between 9/11 and the war in Iraq,” said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
“Iraq is now what it was not when the war began — a magnet for terrorism — because the president invaded Iraq with no idea of what it would take to secure the country after Baghdad fell. The insurgency took root in the unstable conditions that have now existed in substantial parts of Iraq for far too long,” she said.

As for the timetable issue, there isn’t one. President Bush, following the advice of the Military commanders who are actually persecuting the war, refuses to set a date certain when we will leave or reduce forces. Most people with a working brain understand that this is because if a date certain were announced, the insurgents would simply go on vacation and return the day after we left.

As for the President’s constant references to September 11, 2001, the fact is that the farther away we get from that date, the dimmer the memory gets about the unprovoked attack which was launched against us. More and more people, mostly on the left, are drifting back to that “September 10th mentality” where they think that as long as we don’t do anything to offend the islamofascists, they won’t hurt us. This type of thinking does little more than ensure that more innocent Americans will die a horrible death at the hands of the terrorists. What these people fail to understand is that the islamofascists didn’t love America prior to September 11th. In fact, these guys have been planning and plotting to attack America for years. These plans and plots are driven by a strong hatred for democracy which is ingrained into their young from birth. There is no reasoning with these people, as they are not reasonable. All they understand, all they have, is their hatred of democracy.

As for why the insurgency took root in Iraq, it did so because that was where American troops were. If we had never liberated Iraq, and instead stayed in Afghanistan, we’d be fighting the same people in Afghanistan now instead of Iraq.

“In his attempt to mitigate growing concern about his disastrous Iraq policy, the president has failed to address the most significant problems surrounding this ill-conceived, poorly planned and falsely-justified war,” added Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla., in a written statement.

Besides floating the already discredited idea that the war was “falsely-justified”, Wexler fails to do anything other than parrot the liberal line on the War in Iraq.

As I heard on the radio this morning from someone who was impersonating the President, “I gave a speech about Iraq last night, and the Democrats called me a liar, a loser, and a stupid moron. So, what else is new? What’s for dinner?”
