Attention Firefox Users

Thursday, March 31st, 2005

Lately, one of my favorite sites, The Drudge Report, started using some advertising pop-ups which were getting through the Firefox pop-up blocker. Now, one of the reasons I switched to Firefox from Internet Explorer was because of the built-in pop-up blocker, so this was annoying me no end. However, one simple Google search later, and all is well.

Apparently, according to C-Net, programmers have figured out a way around both Firefox’s and Internet Explorer’s pop-up blocker:

The Drudge Report, which did not return a request for comment, is using JavaScript to build in a command for an extra promotional pop when people click on a story. The action is based on user request for the data, instead of issuing a pop arbitrarily, a technique that is widely used elsewhere.

So, basicly, they have re-written the code for pop-ups so that it appears to the browser that you have requested the ad, which makes the browser display it. Fortunately, the same search yeilded the solution for Firefox users as well (scroll down to the reply from GA Dawg on March 1, 2005):

in about:config create an integer named privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins with a value of 2.

Viola, it works! Further on down, they also suggest that you block cookies from Drudge to stop the pop-ups. I have not done that, so I don’t know if that works.

Get Firefox!
