Via Hud’s Blog-O-Rama, some research has actually been done on how people refer to soft drinks. When I first came to Texas, it seemed everyone called a Coke a soda water. Previously, when I had lived in Illinios, it was called a pop. In California, all sodas were referred to as a Coke.

When I went to Massachussetts in the military years ago, people I was with in Springfield called any carbonated drink a “tonic.”
When I said we (Chicago) call it “soda,” the people I was with laughed and said, “You sound like our cousin up in New York!”
