Back From The Dead

Tuesday, August 31st, 2004

Well, the insurance company has decided that I am feeling good enough to be put out in the street, so I am now home from the hospital. I want to thank all of you for your kind words of encouragement; it meant a lot to both me and my wife.
I want to take a minute here to say a special thanks to Rene, my wife. You know, when a person gets sick enough that they have to be taken to the emergency room not once but four times, people tend to think that it is really rough on the patient. However, have you ever stopped to think of how hard it is for those who sit and wait? While I was in the hospital, I almost always knew what was happening. The doctor or nurse would always take a minute and explain what they were doing and why they were doing it. My wife, however, when she was forced (and I do mean forced) to leave my side in the emergency room or in my hospital room, had to wait, sometimes for hours, to find out what was happening. Also, the doctors almost always came by to see me when my wife was not there, so she was never able to ask questions directly.
Despite all of this, my wife persevered and came through for me like a champ. In short, without the support and love of my wife, I would not be here. When the food service people kept sending me food I couldn’t tolerate, she went to war and got me the correct food for my diabetic/renal diet. When I finally confessed to her that I had not slept for a single night after two weeks in the hospital, she went to the doctors and got me relief and a few good nights of rest. Finally, when the four doctors I had looking after me could not decide whether or not to remove my catheter, which was causing all of the infections I was getting, she put her foot down and persuaded them to remove it, which resulted in a speedier recovery and a total elimination of the infections from my blood.
In short, I hope that all of you out there are lucky enough to have a spouse like Rene. There will come a day when you will need someone in your corner, willing to fight it out to the death for you. Rene is that person for me, and I have absolutely no way to adequately thank her for all that she has done for me.

Your brother here is VERY GLAD to see you back at it! I can TRULY attest to what Nick has said about Rene. Her quiet, timid almost shy outward demeanor is very deceptive. Inside there is a strength that knows no bounds. This woman took the bull by the horns and fought for my brother’s life and well-being. Not a day goes by without me giving thanks to the powers that be for bringing Rene to us. I am so glad that Nick is in her capable hands.

God bless you both! You have again taken what life has thrown at you and threw it back!

(Psst! That should read “In short, I hope that all of you out there are lucky enough to have a spouse like MINE!”)

And I know what you mean.
